I went and got my hair cut yesterday afternoon. After the lady (who I have been to several times) washed my hair, she asked me how much I wanted to cut off. Since I have really enjoyed having it long recently, I told her I just wanted a little trimmed. She asked if an inch would be okay. I said yes, but right at an inch, no more.
My hair is now a good 3-4 inches shorter than it was previously. Dan says that it just looks so much shorter because there are some shorter layers in the front but that overall, he thinks it is not that much shorter. I think I disagree...
Why is it that a hairdresser's inch is never equal to my inch? Does this happen to anyone else besides me?

I can TOTALLY relate to this! Yes, it happens to me almost every time. Except the last time I went, which is a funny story...
I have always been super-picky about where I get my hair done, for this exact reason. Even when I go to trusted hair dressers, they rarely seem to follow my directions!
Well, now that Dave and I live in Alaska, it's kind of a "take what you can get" situation. So, last time we were in Fairbanks, I tried a walk-in place. Not only did she do EXACTLY what I asked, but I didn't have to wait more than 10 minutes, and her price was reasonable even by Alaska standards!
So now I'm wondering if the answer is just to go to the cheapest, fastest place available, since at least there my inch was really an inch. :-)
Ok, this happened to me once. I had just gotten back from a trip and needed a hair cut badly. I made the unwise decision to go to one of those cheap places. The lady acted like she had never cut hair before. I told her one inch and she flattened all my hair out (wet) against my neck and cut off one inch! When she dried it, of course, it was at least 2.5 inches shorter. I was horrified and that's about the only time I've cried about a hair cut - even with my recent burning incident!
I have been going to the same hairdresser for 15 years. When we moved to Richardson, I still drive over to Mesquite. Most of the time she does okay, but every once in a while it is like she forgets she has ever cut my hair before. The blessing for me is my hair grows really fast so usually within 2 weeks it isn't as bad. Lately, I have been asking her to
razor cut it as it has a better lift, but the next time I go she gets out the regular scissors and I have to remind her again??
Heather, I do feel your pain! However, I believe I have finally found the answer to this age old dilemma. First, go to someone young and second, go to someone that has a simlar style as you do. Until I did this, I never knew you could actally leave the salon liking your hair. I thought it was only normal to hate my cut for at least a week or two until it grew out at bit!
I should show you the pictures from high school the week before homecoming. I asked for framing around the face. I walked out with a bob! The longest hairs on my head were about 2 inches long! I have never cried so hard in my life!! I'm even getting angry writing this. :)
